What makes a good teacher?

More than nine in ten (91%) 11- to 16-year-olds say that a good teacher respects students, listens and is fair. Other important qualities are having a lively personality (78%), knowing their subject (78%) and enthusiasm (77%). Of least importance are being young/not old (36%), setting challenging tasks (39%) and getting good exam results (46%).

Advice about choosing the right GCSEs/A levels

Over half (53%) of girls in this age range agree with the statement ‘We don’t get enough advice about choosing the right GCSEs/A levels’, rising to 57% of 13- to 16-year-olds. Around a third (34%) disagree with the statement. One in five (19%) 11- to 13-year-olds do not know, compared to only 5% of 13- to 16-year-olds.

Will the increase in tuition fees put you off going to university?

Almost six in ten of girls in this age range (58%) say that the increase in tuition fees would put them off going to university, a quarter (25%) think it would not and roughly one in five (17%) do not know.
