Is global warming a serious problem?
Almost three quarters (70%) of girls in this
age range think that global warming is a serious problem. Just over
one in ten (12%) disagree and a fifth (18%) don’t know.
Which recent world events have you heard of?
The recent world event that most girls aged 11
to 16 have heard of is the war in Afghanistan, which was mentioned
by more than three quarters (78%) of respondents. Other events that
a high proportion of girls this age are aware of include the
protests in the Middle East (69%), student protests in London (69%)
and the earthquake in New Zealand (67%). By contrast, only around a
third have heard of the floods in South America (32%) and in the
Philippines (30%) and one in five (18%) has heard about the
earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Which world events are you worried about?
The world event of greatest concern to girls aged 11 to 16 is
the war in Afghanistan, chosen by 58%, followed by the student
protests in London which were mentioned by 42%. Older girls are
more likely to be worried about the student protests (chosen by 51%
of 13- to 16-year-olds compared to 34% of 11- to 13-year-olds) and
the protests in the Middle East (42% of 13- to 16-year-olds
compared to 30% of 11- to 13-year-olds). Younger girls are more
likely to be concerned about floods in South America (18% compared
to 10%) and the Philippines (15% compared to 9%).
