Would you wait till you are older before having children, or not have children at all, in order to follow your perfect career?

In total, three quarters of girls say ‘yes’ (38%) or ‘maybe’ (37%) to delaying having children or not having them at all in order to pursue their perfect career. One sixth say that they would not do this. Nearly one in ten (9%) do not know.

Life milestones

The majority of girls aged 11 to 16 expect to have a full-time job by the time they are 25 and a fifth expect to have one by the time they are 18. The most common age at which girls in this age range expect to move in with a partner is 22-25 years (43%), followed by a third (33%) who expect to do so when they are 19 to 21 years old. In total 90% of 11- to 16-year-old girls expect to own their own home by age 25, and 99% at least by the time they are 29. The majority of girls in this age range expect to get married before they are 25: 3% before they are 18, 13% at 19 to 21 years old and 46% at 22 to 25 years old. A further quarter (27%) expect to be married by the time they are 29.
