How happy are you most of the time?

Most girls of this age are happy (94%): over half (54%) describe themselves as ‘very happy’ and 40% are ‘quite happy’. Further breaking down the results by age shows that girls aged 7 to 8 are more likely to say that they are ‘very happy’ than 9- to 10-year-olds.

What makes you happy?

We asked all those who described themselves as ‘very’ or ‘quite’ happy what things made them happy. Among 7- to 11-year-old girls, friends were by far the most important factor, mentioned by nearly two thirds (59%) of respondents, followed by family (26%) and school (11%).

Two thirds (66%) of girls in this age range feel safe in their local area. Over half (55%) think that this country is a good place to live and grow up in, and a similar proportion (52%) know many of their neighbours by name. Around one in four (28%) have done something to help a neighbour in the last year. Older girls (aged 9 to 10 rather than 7 to 8) are more likely to know many of their neighbours by name (57% compared to 47%) and feel part of their local community (44% compared to 34%).
