Education, training, skills and careers
What makes a good teacher?
Across the ages of 7-16 girls think that the
most important factor in being a good teacher is respecting
students, listening and being fair (chosen by 73%). They also think
that they should have a lively personality (62%), know their
subject (61%), be well trained (60%) and enthusiastic (59%). Girls
from ethnic minorities are marginally more likely to mention
ensuring good discipline and class control (57% compared to 50% of
white girls) and less likely to mention either using practical
activities (50% compared to 57% of white girls) or knowing their
subject (54% compared to 63%), although the differences are not
significant.
In our earlier survey, the top career choice
among girls aged 7 to 16 was to be a hairdresser or beautician. Why
do you think this is?
Across the ages of 11-21 two thirds (57%) of young women think
that becoming a hairdresser or beautician are popular career
choices for girls because this is what girls are interested in,
around half (48%) think it is because it is easy to get this kind
of job and 43% think that some jobs are ‘more for girls’. Around a
third attributed this choice to a lack of ambition (36%) or it
being all they know about (35%).
